Lafarge worked with the City of Vancouver to complete the reconstruction of Crown Street into the city’s first environmentally sustainable roadway. The goal of the reconstruction was to prevent environmental pollutants from entering the nearby Musqueam Creek, Vancouver’s only remaining wild salmon-bearing stream.
The project involved the reconstruction of the previous street into a traffic-calmed street with minimal impermeable surfaces and a naturalized storm water management system.
The previous 8.5 metre roadway width was completely reconstructed and reduced to 6.7 metres with 1 metre concrete swales in place of the standard concrete curb and gutter.
Crown Street now resembles a country lane with a greened network of swales, retention ponds and structurally reinforced grass protecting Vancouver’s only salmon-bearing stream from pollutants for years to come.
