Scheduled for completion in October, 2007, the $493 million Anthony Henday Drive South East Ring Road project is the first Private-Public-Partnership (P3) roadway of its kind in Alberta.
Details:

The Anthony Henday Drive South East Ring Road project consists of the Design, Building, Financing and Operation of the highway for 30 years after construction is completed in 2007.  The construction phase of the highway from 2005-2007 includes:

  • 11 kilometres total length from Highway 2 to Highway 14/216
  • Six lanes between Highway 2 and 50th Street and four lanes between 50th Street and Highway 216/14 (with grading for two more future lanes)
  • 24 separate bridge structures
  • 124 lane kilometres of highway
  • Full freeway status (no traffic lights) 
  • Five interchanges offering access on and off the highway at Gateway Blvd/Calgary Trail (Highway 2), 91st Street, 50th Street, 17th Street and Highway 14/216. Four flyovers (bridges over/under the highway with no on or off ramps) at 34 Street, 66th Street, 34th Avenue and Parsons Road

Lafarge North America is a prime team member of Access Roads Edmonton Ltd. (AREL) who was awarded the project. Our partners include PCL Construction Management Inc. leading the Design-Build phase of the project; PCL-Maxam, A Joint Venture; Sureway Construction Management Ltd.; Marshall Macklin Monaghan; Stantec Consulting; Transportation Systems Management Inc.; and ABN AMRO Bank N.V.

Lafarge is involved at several levels of the project, including the Design-Build-Operation phase of the roadway.  During the construction phase, Lafarge will supply and install 1,500,000 tonnes of base aggregates and produce and pave 400,000 tonnes of Asphalt Concrete.  The operation and maintenance of the roadway for 30 years after construction will be completed by Transportation Systems Management Inc (TSMI), a subsidiary of Lafarge who is well established in Alberta through its existing maintenance contracts with the Province.
